Juicing on Trim Healthy Mama

JUICING!  Oh, how we loooooove our Green Juice here at Inspired Sugar!

So, I’m going to be real honest here, and admit that… I don’t like veggies.  GASP!  I know, I know it’s shameful.  I’m a grown lady.  I had hoped that by this point in my life, I would start to have at least some appreciation for things like salad, steamed broccoli, mixed veggies, and whatnot.  But… no.

I just am not a fan.  Then, one magical day I discovered JUICING!!!  I don’t mean the kind that comes in a bottle, loaded with weird stuff I can’t pronounce and a bunch of sugars.  I’m talking about fresh, Green Juice.

 About a year ago, I had a rude awakening when a colonoscopy came back with some pre-cancerous polyps.  What!?  I’m only 34!  That’s crazy!  Well, not when you consider that my family has a history of Lynch Syndrome,  and Colon Cancer is a leading cancer associated with the genetic mutation.   In addition, I was one year older than my mother was when she was diagnosed with Colon cancer the first time (it came back about 15 years later).  So, after a good cry, I decided that I needed to seriously consider how I would start taking better care of myself.

Enter Juicing!  One of the first things I learned was that I wasn’t getting NEARLY enough veggies in my diet.  I was pretty much aware of this fact, but there is nothing like browsing through countless health blogs and reading statistics about preventive care to make you realize you’re eating like a picky toddler.  For me, the thing that made the most sense to help me change my ways, was to grab a Juicer and start drinking my greens.

I had watched the Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead documentary years prior, so I felt confident in purchasing a Breville Juicer from Bed, Bath and Beyond which was sponsored on the show.  The first recipe I tried out was the Mean Green Juice because it seemed to be exactly what I needed.  Spinach/Kale, Celery, Cucumber, Lemon, Ginger and a green apple…all good things, all good things! If you are wondering what it tastes like…well it tastes…green.  I won’t lie and say it’s just as good as a Jamba Juice, but as my dad would say- It’s Refreshing.  I can say, that the more you drink it, the more you come to appreciate it.  Now, I love it!  I even kick up the ginger sometimes to get really wild.

So what in the world does this have to do with Trim Healthy Mama?  While Juicing is not considered a part of the eating plan, it has become so important to both Bonnie and myself that we thought we would explain right up front that this is part of how we do this plan.  We almost always stick to the Mean Green recipe which is considerably low in carbs for a juice, and we have it in an E (Energizing) setting with a bit of protein.  It works really well as an afternoon snack.

I know there are a million opinions on Juicing vs. Smoothies.  I believe everyone has a right to their opinion, I can only tell you that this is what works for me.  I feel good.  A year ago, all I wanted to do was take naps in the afternoon and I always felt tired.  Now I rarely notice the afternoon sleepies!!! Typically, I have one Green Juice a day, usually with a piece of Ezekial Bread and all fruit Jam, Half Turkey Sandwhich, or Zero Oikos Greek Yogurt.  Greens and E fuel!  Delish!

I have lost 20lbs since January and even though the scale hasn’t moved much in the last month, my clothes are still consistently getting looser.   I love my daily green juice and I truly feel that for me it is contributing to a Trimmer Healthier Lifestyle.
